Why you need a VPN for World Travel
Once you set out on your world trip (or maybe even when youâre still at home researching), chances are youâll use a variety of different internet connections. And depending on what you use the internet for, you might find that you need a VPN during your world travel. Here are some common reasons you might need a VPN.
Security
The WiFi at your hotel or local cafe is not necessarily secure and this means your private data can be at risk. I donât know about you, but I wouldnât be happy if all of my private data was hacked or stolen because Iâve connected to the wrong WiFi! You really do need to have a VPN service while you are travelling the world.

Accessing sites from home
Did you know that some sites like Netflix and Kayo might not work if youâre overseas? Using apps like Instagram and Facebook donât work in certain countries and this is why youâll need a VPN service for your World Travel. A VPN allows your browser to browse from home. If youâre trying to use your local sites, you can connect from your home country allowing you access to the things you might not otherwise be able to access.Â
Sometimes even my bank account blocks me from logging in. Itâs nice to know that I can make it appear that Iâm browsing from Australia or New Zealand whenever I need to!Â
Financial transactions
Whenever you are connecting to a network, you are connecting to something that potentially has open traffic. If youâre doing your online banking or transacting with cryptocurrency, this is an aspect that cannot be overlooked. In Australia and New Zealand we often take our privacy for granted. In other parts of the world our privacy is not so guaranteed. You DEFINITELY need to have a secure network when performing financial transactions. This is something I would NOT take any risks with!Â
Get the best priced flights
Sometimes flights can come up cheaper if you are searching from the country home to the airline. Vietnam is a good example of this. If youâre outside of Vietnam, change your VPN location to Vietnam, and all of a sudden, youâll see the rates people in Vietnam see. Winning. And yes, I tried it. It does work!Â
What is a VPN?
A VPN is short for Virtual Private Network. This allows you to hide your location and data from the web. This simply means when Iâm in Vietnam, I can connect via my Australian VPN if I want to access Aussie Netflix, or if Iâm in New Zealand and want to book a Vietnam Airlines flight for the best price I can connect via my Vietnam VPN.Â
The VPN keeps your browsing private and prevents you from getting hacked. I donât want my information stolen and I feel much safer using the VPN. This is why everyone needs a VPN for world travel!
How much does a VPN cost?
I currently use NordVPN. It costs me $3.49 a month because I knew Iâd be gone a while and opted to purchase three years in advance. If youâre not keen on signing up for two or three years, you can always go monthly for $12 per month.
You can use this application on up to six devices, and you get information telling you the speed of your connection. Thereâs also a handy âPause your connectionâ tool if youâre having problems with a particular site. I sometimes experience this logging into the NZ government sites, for this I just open a private browser instead.
NordVPN have servers all around the world, so you can be sure there will be a connection nearby that will work for you.Â

How do you set it up?
All you have to do is click here and purchase the VPN subscription that works best for you. You can choose to go monthly, annually or purchase more than one year in advance.
Once you have set yourself up, youâll get the links to download the apps for your phone and computers or Mac. Once youâve downloaded these and logged in, you are free to browse privately from anywhere in the world.
Itâs really that easy, a VPN is essential for your world travel adventure!
Things to remember
NordVPN is a subscription service, so remember to cancel it if youâre no longer using it. It will bill continually monthly or annually on the date you subscribed. This is important if youâre doing an annual subscription!
