The World’s Whitest Sand, Hyams Beach, NSW, Australia

While searching for a beautiful beach for a wedding, I discovered Hyam’s Beach. Before then, I had no idea such a beautiful place was so close to Sydney. Hyams Beach is about two hours drive south of Sydney. It is located in the beautiful Jervis Bay area, also home to Huskisson Beach and Booderee National Park.

Hyams Beach is the Guinness World Record holder for the whitest sand. When I learned that, I had to go see it for myself. If you didn’t already know, I’m a beach lover. An island lover. I love staring out at the water, out over the blue and green, at the horizon. I probably belong on a boat. Except I get seasick.

We made a trip down in January, but by the time we reached the beach, rain had set in. People were leaving. I didn’t bother pulling out my camera! I was a little disappointed, or a lot. We decided we really needed to go back, for at least a couple of days.

When we finally made the trip back, the weather was gorgeous. I thought the beach was beautiful. The white sand against the blues and greens of the ocean was really different to most of the beaches I’ve visited. The turquoise water was brilliant. Most places I’ve been have a really dark colour water, or bright green colours. This was different, maybe because of the sand. I have no idea!

It might have been winter, but at least it wasn’t freezing. I told the kids, “don’t get wet”. They ran around in the shallows, then play fight, and sure enough Aaliyah landed in the water. We had to go back for clothes from our cabin at Huskisson Beach. The rest of our day was spent at Booderee National Park.

A tip for your trip to Hyams Beach

Take a small jar, or something to take some sand home with. My kids asked me, “can we take home some of the whitest sand?” We only had a paper cup. Sure enough, they found a way to bring home sand… In their pockets!
