Gold Coast Theme Parks with Kids: Movie World, Sea World & Wet’n’Wild

Our Theme Park Adventures

We visited the Gold Coast theme parks twice in 2015, once in the Easter school holidays and again in June. This post is that trip: what worked with littler kids, what felt overcrowded, and what we would do differently. If you want a free nature day nearby, O’Reilly’s Treetop Walk is about 90 minutes inland from the coast.

My sister-in-law recommended a multi-park pass covering Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, and Wet’n’Wild, because those parks suited smaller children better, with more rides they could actually get on.

Tickets and deals (then vs now)

Back then we lucked into a discounted multi-park “VIP” style pass on special (around $69 each via deal sites, versus a much higher walk-up multi-park price and pricey single-day entry). That deal made doing more than one park feel realistic for a family.

Today, LivingSocial is no longer a useful Australian deal source for this (their AU business was sold years ago). Groupon Australia still surfaces Gold Coast theme-park offers from time to time, but the reliable starting point is the official Village Roadshow Theme Parks site. Look for current multi-day / multi-park passes (names change; think Escape / Super / Mega style passes covering Movie World, Sea World, Wet’n’Wild, and sometimes Paradise Country). Compare any Groupon or reseller voucher carefully against the official pass inclusions and validity window before you buy.

Here’s what we learned from our visits:

Movie World

Movie World was the busiest of the three parks. What kid doesn’t want to meet Batman and see the Batmobile? If you are really excited about this park, I recommend visiting outside of peak times. It is not so exciting in the middle of school holidays. By 10.30am, waiting times were around an hour for most rides. Go early if you have to go in the holidays! Fast-track / queue-skip add-ons can help if your budget allows. They were too expensive for us.

If you visit during school holidays, and if you have purchased your multi-park ticket online, I highly recommend getting to the first park you visit really early. Once you have your pass in hand, the queues at the gate won’t be painful, and you’ll practically walk straight in.

Our favourite rides

The rides here are pretty good. The kids’ favourite was the Dynamite roller coaster. We also did the Scooby-Doo ride (complete darkness, fast, and sometimes backwards, so my son was scared). I made my son go on the log flume (what a meany). He hated it. When we went back the second time, he was okay. My top tip for taking kids on rides if they are scared: tell them to scream heaps. It worked for us!

Tips for visiting

If you can visit Movie World out of school holidays, you’ll find the place a lot quieter. A ride might be down for maintenance, but you’re more likely to get photos with the characters. During our school-holiday visit there was practically no chance of good character photos; there were always too many people hanging around at once.

Sea World

I know some people don’t like aquariums and marine parks. Yep, it is pretty sad that animals are contained. At the same time, it can be a chance to learn a bit about amazing animals. I’ve always loved watching the dolphin shows, since I was a kid.

Sea World was much easier outside school holidays. No queues at all. We went on rides back to back without waiting five minutes. It is a sweet day out with no crowds. You could get right up close to the penguin enclosure, much better than the giant squash we experienced at Easter. During the holidays it still wasn’t over-packed, but there were longer waits for the log flume (nowhere near as scary as the one at Movie World).

Wet’n’Wild

Water parks are usually my favourite. We visited in April, though, and it was already cooling down on the Gold Coast. We braved it, but I was definitely too cold, so that visit was disappointing. The kids did the lazy river twice and went in the wave pool. Noah turned blue. I tried to take him on a hydro-slide, but that became a mission. We found ourselves in the “hot tubs.” Let’s just say these were more like cold baths. There was no “hot” in those tubs! We cut the day short… and we didn’t bother going back in June. Water parks are wonderful when it’s hot, so timing matters more than the ticket here.

Would we go again?

For a family with young kids, the multi-park approach still makes sense if you can visit more than one park without paying full day tickets each time. Our biggest lessons still hold: arrive early in holidays, save Wet’n’Wild for proper heat, and treat Movie World as the park that needs the most queue strategy.
