Family life outside the box

Our Family Travel Blog

In 2013, Rimaha and I ditched the kids for a 'once in a lifetime' journey across Europe. We had a quick stopover in Dubai before spending time in Italy, France, Spain and Greece. It was a five week dream come true for me. It was also the adventure that left me feeling like, 'that cannot be a once in a lifetime experience!' When we got home, we planned for our 2014 Cook Islands wedding. And after our wedding I got to thinking, 'How can we travel the world with kids?' And that's what started our adventure.

This part of the blog will have a mix of posts from our time in 2013 all the way through to the adventures made while we are in this part of the world.

While we are lacking content, I'll add some of our collective bucket list items we will tick off as we travel!

Rimaha and I spent only a couple of nights here. I'll do a quick post on our time there.

Bucket list

  • Aaliyah wants to see the Eiffel Tower.
  • Spend some time in Nice.
  • Maybe Paris Disneyland
  • Louvre Museum (we ran out of time on our 2013 adventure)
  • Mont Saint-Michel

  • We really want to return to Paros and Santorini!
  • Take the kids to the Acropolis
  • Crete
  • Zakynthos
  • Meteora
  • Actually, all the islands. I could spend a lot of time here!!

I feel like we did a pretty good job in Italy. A lot of places we'd love to take the kids back to! There are also a handful of places we'd like to see that we weren't able to see while we were there.

  • Take the kids to Rome - all the things we did while we were there were AMAZING
  • Return to Venice with the kids
  • Return to Capri (maybe we don't need to take the kids when we go back here?!)
  • Pompeii
  • Sicily
  • Cinque Terre

When hubby and I visited Spain, it was purely so he could run with the bulls. The trip was built around that event. We didn't have any expectation of Spain, but this was the place we fell in love with. We only stayed in San Sebastian, Pamplona and Madrid while we were there. This was enough for me to constantly think about how we would go back to Spain after we returned home.

  • Walk the Camino is our main bucket list item for Spain
  • We also want to travel the entire country. No point making a dot point list, it would be too long!

This was a country that was on our original 2020 itinerary. We finally arrived on the 4th August, 2021 (a year and a half later than planned). Our initial plan was a one month trip. After everything got cancelled, we realised we could easily spend three months in Turkey. So far, we've visited Istanbul and Kas (a coastal town). Our list is pretty long here:

  • Cappadocia
  • Anzac Day at Galipolli
  • Pammukale
  • Antalya / Alanya
  • Ephesus
  • The region around Izmir
  • Bodrum
  • Ankara

Keep watching. Posts will come as we start ticking these (and more) off our list.

About Us

We are a blended Kiwi family of five. All born in New Zealand, we have lived abroad for most of the kids lives. Rimaha moved to Australia 15 years ago, Melissa, Noah and Aaliyah followed 10 years ago with a dream to someday travel the world. In 2020 we set off on our dream, stopping to live in Hoi An and An Bang along the way.

We travel with World Nomads as this works best for our family. They were great help when our son had a fever right as the Coronavirus pandemic broke out!

My Favourite Web Hosting Company

I started building websites in 2015. Since then I’ve tried a lot of different hosting companies. Siteground is the only one I recommend, and it is also recommended by my favourite travel bloggers!
