A One Month Vietnam Family Travel Itinerary

Yesterday we finally booked our flights out of New Zealand and I've finally created a one month Vietnam family travel itinerary. This is the plan for our adventure through Vietnam.

Until this week, we had no idea where we would go between February and April. We had booked our business class flights from Singapore to Istanbul back in October 2019, so we had only done planning from 13 April 2020.  There was only a vague idea of five or six weeks in Asia before we would skip to Turkey and Germany then walk our Camino. Click here to see our Round the world with kids plan.

After we arrived in New Zealand on the 11th February 2020, I started looking at our options to fly to Asia. Vietnam was a place we knew we wanted to visit, but we also knew we didn't want to rush it.

We made the decision to fly into Ho Chi Minh City, spend a few days and spend more time in Da Nang, near the beach.

Here's our detailed plan:

Auckland to Ho Chi Minh City

Our flight departs at 11.55pm on 5th March 2020. We are hopeful the kids might sleep on the plane because it's a 10.5 hour flight to Manila with a six hour layover!

We fly from Manila on the 6th March about mid day. It is only a short flight to Ho Chi Minh from here.

We set off on our trip - as planned - March 2020

Ho Chi Minh City

We will stay here for four nights at Funny Guesthouse (a great place to stop for a few nights in the city). We plan to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum. I'm not sure what else we will do!

Danang

On the 10th March we fly to Danang. We decided ten nights in Da Nang will be good. Maybe we will get lucky and there might be some waves for Rimaha. From here we plan to visit Hue, Ba Na Hills, Son Tra and My Son Temples. We are staying close to the beach and we have a pool, so we are planning for this to be relaxed and easy going.

Hoi An

On the 19th March we will make our way down to Hoi An. Here we hope to walk through the old town, visit some of the markets and perhaps spend a day on An Bang beach. We were told this is one of the best places in Vietnam, so it had to go on our one month Vietnam family travel itinerary.

We didn't get beyond Hoi An, stopping here and An Bang beach for two months during Covid - May 2020

Quy Nhon

We'll have to head back up to Danang to catch a train to Quy Nhon. This will happen on the 22th March 2020. A friend of mine recommended this place as a more authentic location compared with Nha Trang. No plans for this place, just hang out on the beach for six nights.

Nha Trang

On the 28th March we will catch a train down to Nha Trang and spend a few nights in an apartment overlooking the ocean for five nights.

Ho Chi Minh City

To wrap up our one month Vietnam family travel itinerary, we fly back to Ho Chi Minh on the 2nd April. Our one month e-visas will end on the 4th April, and from here we plan to head overland to Cambodia.

One Month Vietnam Family Travel Plan vs Reality: What Really Happened?

Covid-19 hit the world after only a week in Vietnam. We made the decision to stay and see the country during this different time. Here are some of our posts from Vietnam.

We recently did a podcast interview about our trip turned upside down on Hustle Talk with Aaron WD Huey. Click here to listen to it on Spotify.
